GATE CS exam pattern
The GATE CS paper has 65 questions for 100 marks in 180 minutes: 10 General Aptitude questions (15 marks) and 55 questions (85 marks) from Engineering Mathematics and Computer Science. Questions carry 1 or 2 marks and are multiple choice (MCQ), multiple select (MSQ) or numerical answer (NAT). Only a wrong MCQ loses marks: one third of its marks.
| Section | Questions | Marks if right | Marks if wrong |
|---|---|---|---|
| General Aptitude | 10 | 1 or 2 | −⅓ of marks (MCQ only) |
| Engineering Mathematics | 8 | 1 or 2 | −⅓ of marks (MCQ only) |
| Digital Logic | 4 | 1 or 2 | −⅓ of marks (MCQ only) |
| Computer Organization and Architecture | 6 | 1 or 2 | −⅓ of marks (MCQ only) |
| Programming and Data Structures | 7 | 1 or 2 | −⅓ of marks (MCQ only) |
| Algorithms | 6 | 1 or 2 | −⅓ of marks (MCQ only) |
| Theory of Computation | 5 | 1 or 2 | −⅓ of marks (MCQ only) |
